Damn You, Law of Averages!!

Goodbye six game winning streak, hello four game losing streak. A .600 winning percentage ain’t bad, but it’s sure not what it looked like we had going before Ike washed all our mojo away. Goodbye .305 team batting average, hello .092 team batting average. Goodbye 32 1/3 scoreless innings, hello four run first. Wait, back up, we’re hitting .092??!! Over four games??!! Okay, things will get better over the remaining games. Things CAN’T stay like this.

Chances are, we aren’t going to make the playoffs, but heck, is this a team that deserves to go to the playoffs? We’ll finish with a winning record, which is pretty darn impressive for a team that had to trot Runelvys Hernandez onto the bump more than once. Honestly, if this team does regain the magic to make the playoffs, I’ll be overwhelmed, overjoyed, and also a bit worried about the validation that would provide to the tactics of Ed Wade and Drayton McLane (more on that next time).

The law of averages catches up to a team like this, to guys like Brian Moehler, Randy Wolf, Darin Erstad and Geoff Blum. It was fun while it lasted, but now it’s time to salute a group that didn’t quit after being in last place at the All Star break. These guys are winners.

  1. wow, you sound so cheerful that I thought it was Berkmaniac posting. I meand that in a totally neutral way.

    .092. Jesus.

But you’re right – We are impressive! Hooray for us! Hooray for third place!

  2. How about we make a serious attempt to think about the future this offseason, ok Mr. Wade?

  3. Haha, what do you think his first move will be?

My guess: resign Randy Wolf, $22 mill, 4 years.

Next: Ben Sheets, $52 mill, 5 years

Next: LaTroy Hawkins: $6 mill, 1 year

I’m totally coming up with this on the fly, but we should do some serious post-season posting about the free agent market. Once the Cubs are out of it, I’ll be free to devote my energies to following the chase.

And maybe I’ll finally write that post I’ve been thinking about:

    Ed Wade: Shopaholic

It’ll have a picture of Ed Wade in a mall parking lot with all these shopping bags. Miggy’s head is popping out of the Nordstrom Bag, Sheets will be Neiman’s, and Wolf – Macy’s?

    Seriously, the man can’t stop!

  4. Wow, MLB Trade rumors has Sheets at $55 mill, 3 years. I was on the low side, huh?

I think it comes down to whether or not Drayton considers being from Louisiana as good enough as being from Texas. If he does, Wade gets the green light to spend, spend, spend! At least this time it won’t cost us Willy T!

  5. Ya know, I feel better too. Thanks Cabeza. Next April should be fun. You know these gys are gonna have a chip on their shoulder after a hurricane knocked them out of the race.

Also, we have the coolest bench in the majors. I think I’ll miss Loretta, Erstad, Newhan, Bourn, Castillo, and Blum most of all. Maybe Wade will trade our top prospect for another bench infielder. Good times.

Someone stick a cowboy hat on CC Sabathia, quick!

  7. this place died eh? You guys coming back in the spring?

    • Cabeza De Vaca Says:

Hey, yeah. This place did die, and I had all these great ideas I never followed up with on offseason roster moves. It’s coming back to life. I plan on posting more this season. A lot more. Quantity, not quality.
